Carhart’s notch is classically seen as a dip centered around 2 kHz range of bone conduction curve audiometery. This feature is seen in patients with otosclerosis. This article attempts to discuss why this dip is caused in the bone conduction audiometry curve in these patients. (1) The presence of a refraction of the bone conduction curve with a depth of 10 to 20 dB at a frequency of 2000 Hz (the so-called Carhart notch) in the presurgical tonal audiogram is an unfavorable prognostic factor in relation to closing the cochlear reserve and improving bone conduction after the stapedotomy. As first described in 1950 by Raymond Carhart, the audiometric profile of classic otosclerosis presumes a "Carhart Notch" (CN) most likely to be found at 2000 Hz. Since that time, there have been multiple reports in the literature reporting CNs likely to be distributed between 500 and 2000 Hz. An audiometric finding characteristic of otosclerosis is an increase in bone conduction threshold with a peak at 2,000 Hz known as Carhart's notch (Carhart, 1950). As 2 kHz is the resonant frequency of the ossicular chain, the largest increase in bone-conduction threshold (around 15 dB) occurs at this frequency – the resultant notch is called Carhart's notch and is a useful clinical marker for medial ossicular-chain fixation.

Car·hart notch. (kahr'hahrt noch). Isolated depression around 2000 Hz in the bone-conduction audiogram  Mar 27, 2021 The Carhart notch, an audiological finding mainly of historical importance, is a dip at 2000 hz in bone conduction without a corresponding dip in  May 9, 2005 An audiometric finding characteristic of otosclerosis is an increase in bone conduction threshold with a peak at 2,000 Hz known as Carhart's  This produces a characteristic loss in bone-conducted (BC) hearing of about 20 dB between 1 and 2 kHz, known as "Carhart's notch", for which the specific  Carhart's notch is a mechanical artifact of stapes fixation. Carhart's notch is characteristic of otosclerosis and it disappears with successful closure of the air- bone  The notch has come to be called the “Carhart notch.”2. FIGURE 2A. This enables us to compare the results of the t A notch was defined when the threshold at the notch frequency (3,000, 4,000, or 6,000 Hz) minus the 2,000 Hz threshold and the threshold at the notch frequency minus the 8,000 Hz threshold both were greater than or equal to 10 dB. In group 1, 77.1% did not have a notch at 4,000 Hz. Carhart’s Notch: A window into mechanisms of bone-conducted hearing. Namkeun Kim –kimnk@stanford.edu Charles R. Popular version of paper 4aPPa2 2013-08-05 Otosclerosis is a condition of the inner ear where one or more foci of irregularly laid spongy bone replace part of normally dense enchondral layer of bony otic capsule in the bony labyrinth. This condition affects one of the ossicles (the stapes) resulting in hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo or a combination of symptoms. The term otosclerosis is something of a misnomer. 2021-03-09 2021-03-19 Carhart's Notch Its Implications.

Popular version of paper 4aPPa2 2015-08-02 The audiologic test results in the fixed malleus cases reviewed for this study often presented a misleading picture, sometimes mimicking stapedial otosclerosis with a characteristic Carhart's notch and sometimes indistinguishable from sensorineural presbycusis.
