Art Cinema as Institution, Redux: Art Houses, Film Festivals, and Film Studies David Andrews, Independent Scholar In a recent issue of Scope, Eleftheria Thanouli observes that, thirty years on, the two most influential articles on art cinema remain David Bordwell's "The Art Cinema as a Mode of Film Practice" (1979) and Steve Neale's "Art Cinema as David Bordwell, Kristin Thompson, and Jeff Smith are leading film scholars and the authors of the definitive cinema studies textbook, “Film Art.” This short documentary introduces you to the three of them in Madison, Wisconsin‚ both on campus at the University of Wisconsin and in Thompson and Bor Fiction Film (1985), where art cinema was placed among three other "historical modes of narration" and was offered a very specific position in the poetic history of cinema. According to Bordwell, art cinema developed as an alternative paradigm mainly in Europe after World War Two, partly as a result of the decline of Hollywood dominance.
